The members of the Grooveyard Jazz Trio have been playing together since 1994. In addition to performing as a trio, they have played and recorded with groups featuring many of the finest musicians in Southern Oregon. In 2007 they began calling themselves Grooveyard. Dave Swan—Piano & Keyboards
Dave is a Rogue Valley native and graduate of the Southern Oregon University music program. He plays piano with Leslie Kendall’s Flat 5 Quartet and is a past keyboardist with the Rogue Suspects. Dave is one of the valley’s finest pianists.
Gary “Chicken” Hirsh—Drums & Percussion
Like the other players in Grooveyard, “Chick” is a long time resident of Ashland, Oregon. A jazz musician since the 1950’s, he’s worked with many great musicians, including Pharoah Sanders, Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin. He is best known for his years as drummer with Country Joe & the Fish. In addition to Grooveyard, “Chick” plays with The Ed Dunsavage Trio, Latin Jazz Quartet, Bluenotes, Adam Harris Trio and Leslie Kendall.
Joe Cohoon—Upright Bass
Joe plays bass with Grooveyard. Originally from Portland, he’s played in jazz, rock, blues and country bands since the late 1960’s. He has accompanied, among others, artists such as Charles Neville, Mimi Fox, Olu Dara, Ruthie Foster & Thad Beckman. In addition to Grooveyard, Joe is currently playing with Ed Dunsavage, Leslie Kendall and Beatles cover band, the Nowhere Men.

Ed Dunsavge – Joe, as well as the other members of Grooveyard, have been playing with guitarist Ed Dunsavage since 1994. First with Good Bait, featuring saxophonist John Dempsey, then in several incarnations of the Ed Dunsavage Trio, which includes Joe and Chick as current members. Joe and Chick also appear on his CD, “Alone Together”. In addition to his activities as a guitarist, Ed is Artistic Director of the Siskiyou Institute, an organization involved in bringing nationally known jazz artists to the Rogue Valley and jazz into our local schools.
Leslie Kendall – The members of Grooveyard, along with Ed, make up the Flat Five Quartet, one of Leslie’s performing and recording bands. They recorded the album, “I Thought About You” with Leslie Kendall in 2004.
Thad Beckman – Occasionally, Joe has the opportunity to perform with his childhood friend, Thad Beckman. Thad is an accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter with several wonderful CDs available. Much of Thad’s time is spent touring Europe and playing venues in and around Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon.
